Frans J Wortmann, Professor of Fibre and Textile Technology, School of Materials, University of Manchester, U.K. Prof Wortmann is a Fellow of The Royal Society of Chemistry and has worked closely with the Charles Worthington team to develop the technology for Straight and Smooth, and is a co-inventor on the patent application for the straightening technology. Prof Wortmann has 20 years of experience with developing, conducting and managing R&D projects, mainly in the area of hair cosmetics. He has published 200+ original scientific papers and is a regular speaker at major cosmetic science and materials science conferences. Prof Wortmann has a wide range of research interests which include investigating the effects of chemical treatments on the physical properties of hair fibres. |

How long have you worked with Charles?
I have worked with Charles since 2004. He is very involved in the products right from the development to testing. Charles is very passionate about producing high quality products and is committed to getting the best results. So we work with him to test our prototypes and we don’t stop until Charles` has tested the product and gives us his final approval.
Where did the inspiration for Salon at Home Straight & Smooth come from?
About 3 years ago, we picked up on an emerging trend for straightening treatments in leading London salons. We knew from experience that an in-home solution for easy to manage, frizz-free hair would be enormously popular and so set about finding a way to recreate the results in a safe and easy to use treatment.
How was the product tested?
In addition to rigorous testing with Charles and his team at our Innovation Centre, we also tested the product on over 400 people in salon and in an in-home consumer trial, which is over 40,000,000 strands of hair!
What were the results after testing the product?
We tested the product on people with both coloured and non-coloured hair. The results were amazing with over 85% of women who trialled the product, agreeing that it effectively straightened their hair for up to 6 weeks. These results were fantastic and showed that the treatment was very effective on all hair types with the results lasting for up to 40 days.
Is Salon at Home Straight & Smooth as good as a salon straightening treatment?
Salon treatments can be more extreme and could leave your hair poker straight which can be quite difficult to style. Salon at Home Straight & Smooth is a gentler straightening treatment that leaves your hair more natural looking and much more easy to control.
Why is this product different to anything else that’s currently on the market?
This product is safe, easy to use and really does work. In my view, there is nothing out there that offers this combination of benefits all in one product and you can do yourself at home! It’s a true innovation and one that we are all very proud of.
